The University system in North Macedonia

 

Structure: The university system in North Macedonia is divided into three cycles of higher education. The first cycle includes undergraduate programs, the second cycle is the master’s programs, and the third cycle is dedicated to doctoral (Ph.D.) programs. 

Duration: Bachelor’s programs typically last three to four years, master’s programs take one to two years, and Ph.D. programs usually require three to four years to complete.

Tuition Fees: Tuition fees vary depending on the university, program, and level of study. Public universities often have lower tuition fees than the private ones. There are also scholarship opportunities for both domestic and international students.

International Cooperation: North Macedonian universities actively engage in international cooperation and student exchange programs with universities from other countries. 

Language: The primary language used in North Macedonian Universities is Macedonian. Universities like Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje offer Macedonian language courses for foreign students. However in the private Universities students can choose a program in English language. 

Grades: The Bologna Process is implemented in the country, so the education system follows the three-cycle structure with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) for credit transfer.
